Defining mass source as mass fraction into density for species transport.

Dear Users

I'm using the species transport module which uses the following equation:

And I want to add source term, which requires units of [kg m^-3 s^-1] and is defined by-

Source = -2[s^-1] * MassFraction * Density

And I'm adding it through Fluent Expressions, but is giving some error and the fluent automatically closes immediately as I hit OK.

 

How to resolve this problem??

 

And if I exclude MassFraction (which has no units) from the source expression, then the simulation runs fine. But in my problem, I need to include this MassFraction term.

    MassFraction of what? Can you try including the scope of the variable?

    I've defined two fluids in the materials:

    first fluid = nanoparticle

    2nd fluid = water

    And the mixture of both the fluids (let's say fluid_1) by specifying the mass fraction of nanoparticle in water.

    I'm trying to flow fluid_1 [nanoparticles + water] in a domain which is initially containing only water, which means MassFraction of nanoparticle is zero initially in the flow domain.

    And the flow will be governed by the convection-diffusion Process. So, I'm using Species Transport Model in Ansys fluent.

     

    But there is a source in my problem, which I need to include and I’m adding it through Parameter Expressions.

    Source = -2[s^-1] * MassFraction * Density

    It gave the Error shown in the above picture and then the fluent window automatically closed.

    MassFraction only is wrong you need to provide the scope MassFraction(species='h2o') for example

    Can you please tell, how can I define the scope.

    And do I need to define it in Parameter Expressions??

    Just use the expression first before doing any parameter. The scope either you do it manualyy or you select it from the variable lists in the expression manager (I am using the release 2020r2).

    I couldn't see any option for giving scope in the variables and don't know how to give it manually. Can you please help me out?

    That how can I give it manually, because it's nowhere mentioned in any help manual.

    Is this the expression? - 

    MassFraction(species='h2o')

    And do I need to enter the name of the fluid in between single quotes.

    I tried the suggestion given by you of including the scope of MassFraction and entered the expression as:

    Source = -2[s^-1]*MassFraction(species='nano-particle<n>')*Density

    But still, it is giving error:

    So that is the way to define the expression. Which version are you using? Is UDF an alternative? Can you check in the Expression Managers under Variables>Species and look after the MassFraction of your specie?

    Hello Amine

    I agree that context is same, but under species, there is no provision or option for including the scope of MassFraction, which I'd to include manually later.

    And copying that expression given by you, actually worked, because earlier the fluent window closed when I included the MassFraction without defining scope.

    And by including scope, it takes expression successfully but the error is getting while running the simulation.

    So then we cannot help here: you might give it a try with a simple UDF to check if it is working at all. By the way you need to provide the same source term for species equation.

    I can tell refer to the Customizatiopn Manual it contains a lot of examples. First of all here try with constant input for both equations continuity and species if it is running at all. Moreover your source term looks a bit odd: is it really so defined??

    In actual I've to solve the following equation, but there is not any direct provision for solving in terms of concentration.

    But species transport module uses the following equation which uses massfraction and density rather than concentration. and the rest terms are same as of above equaiton.

    So, I converted concentration into massfraction, as I already know the density of mixture and then gave the input values for simulation.

     

    One another option:

    Can I use "User Defined Scalar" for directly solving the 1st equation which contains concentration terms ?

    As in my problem, the fluid domain is also porous. So, I also have to give porosity to the fluid domain.

    If yes, can I give porosity for the flow domain in cell zone conditions for the equation to be solved by  "User Defined Scalar" ?

    • And also do I need to give the velocity which is represented by 'u' in the equation -  in the UDS code or in the boundary conditions ?
    • And also the term 'D'  which represents diffusivity, where can I define it - in the material properties or in the UDS code ?

    1/You can use UDS

    2/That is independent of UDS equation. Refer to the equation solved in the manual.

    3/u is the convective velocity: it is not an input (unless you want to modifiy it)
