What are some differences between the behaviors of ductile and brittle materials? Can you give some practical examples of ductile and brittle materials?

Ductility and brittleness are the terms for describing that how much a material could be deformed plastically. A ductile material like steel, undergoes plastic deformation before fracture. In contrast, cast iron or glass, fracture without showing any plastic deformation. This kind of materials are called brittle materials.

Hi @prajput, Failure in brittle materials is more sudden, as in there are no obvious visual cues such as excessive deformation, necking etc. The material suddenly fractures when the stress exceeds material tensile strength. On the other hand, in case of ductile material, we may see some necking or excessive deformation prior to actual failure.

Hi, you can find some answers in the coming Ansys Innovation Courses in Materials section and in Ansys Granta EduPack as well, which is a unique set of teaching resources to support materials education. See an example of EduPack content below.
