1. Because it is rotating - It will have friction and windage loses. Transformer has no moving parts
2. Because there is an air gap between stator and rotor - This increases the mmf and magnetizing current to push the magnetic flux overcoming the air gap reluctance. The additional mmf needs to be supplied from the input supply
