Ansys insight: Fixing Lumerical Activation errors

The following error messages may occur when upgrading from an older version of Ansys Lumerical software. Typically it is possible to simply install the new version without manually un-installing the older version first. However, in some cases the automatic un-install fails on Windows, resulting in one of the following errors:

  • Activation failed with error code # -
  • Error: There was a problem loading the activation library. Code #
  • Internal error: -178

Try to resolved by a 'Clean Installation".

Windows:

  1. Close the error message and Reboot your PC.
  2. Uninstall 'Ansys Lumerical' from Windows 'Control Panel > Programs and Features'.
  3. Delete the installation folder. Go to 'C:\Program Files\Lumerical\' and ensure the 'version' folder (e.g. v211) has been removed. If it is still present, delete this folder.
  4. Removed your Lumerical 'product preference.ini' files,
    • Open a Windows command prompt
    • Run the following,
      • ren %appdata%\Lumerical\License.ini License.orig
      • del %appdata%\Lumerical\*.ini
      • ren %appdata%\Lumerical\License.orig License.ini
  5. See Lumerical Product Preference.ini files for more information.
  6. Reboot your computer
  7. Install the new version of Ansys Lumerical on your PC.

Linux:

  1. Close the error message.
  2. Uninstall 'Lumerical' from your machine. Example shows Lumerical 2021 R1.
    • sudo yum remove Lumerical-2021R1
  3. Delete the installation folder.
    • sudo rm -R /opt/lumerical/v211
  4. Removed your Lumerical 'product preference.ini' files,
    • mv $HOME/.config/Lumerical/License.ini License.orig
    • rm $HOME/.config/Lumerical/*.ini
    • mv $HOME/.config/Lumerical/License.orig License.ini
  5. See Lumerical Product Preference.ini files for more information.
  6. Install the new version of Lumerical on your machine.
