Heat simulation region of Lumerical

In the example of photothermal heat generation, the HEAT solver file uses a simulation region as below containing three types of BC (closed, shell and open) as below:

May I ask what each of them means?

    Hi,

Thanks for reaching out. The closed and open boundaries are relevant for HEAT simulations. They essentially determine whether the simulation region will further extend if a structure doesn’t end at simulation boundary. Shell is used for PML boundary condition, useful for optical simulations in FEEM and DGTD. These boundaries are also described in this documentation article.

    Best regards
