the best way to mesh stl is using Fluent Meshing. please check following links.

when you import stl in spaceclaim, it will have many faceted faces. if you convert them into geometry faces then each one will convert into one geometry face and it would be mess for meshing. 


if you still want to persist with spaceclaim, please check if you can create geometry out of stl using skin tool or any other tool.
