As mentioned the main objective is to lower the thermal resistance which can be lowered by increasing the thermal conductivity of the fin and the overall area of convection. Fin performance can be described using either fin effectiveness or fin efficiency. Fin effectiveness is defined as ratio of fin heat transfer rate to the heat transfer rate of the object without a fin. Fin efficiency is defined as ratio of fin heat transfer rate to the heat transfer rate of the fin if the fin temperature were equal to its base temperature. The value is always less than 1. Generally, there is a temperature distribution over the fin (base of the fin is hotter than its tip).
