For shallow water waves applications, the Froude number is used to define three flow conditions: 

-subcritical (Fr<1), the water velocity < wave velocity, namely downstream conditions affect the upstream flow;

-critical (Fr=1), the water velocity = wave velocity, upstream waves remain stationary;

-supercritical (Fr>1), the water velocity > wave velocity, namely upstream flow is not affected by the downstream conditions.
