If you have solid bodies, it is highly desirable to create a small face on the solid body to apply a "point" load because applying a force to a point in a solid mesh creates a theoretical infinite stress. Instead create a Remote Force to get the point you want, but it gets scoped to the small face you create.
If you have a surface and will have shell elements, you can get away with applying a force to a vertex. You create that vertex by using Split Face on that face. You need to create a few Coordinate Systems to do the split operation first.
