A composite material is a combination of two or more materials. These individual materials usually have very different material properties. Sometimes the materials have a biased stiffness in a particular direction making them non-isotropic. By combining the different materials and orienting their stiffness, a composite material can be constructed that tuned for the needs of the application. In high performance engineered structures, glass or carbon reinforced plastics is very common.
