Workbench Mechanical does element shape checking when it meshes, so it turns off shape checking by Mechanical APDL (the solver) as it is redundant.  

The material warning is for a contact element in the model.  Contact elements don't necessarily need material properties as they use the properties from the regular element they are attached to.  Now there are a few contact features that would result in a material model used by the contact element like friction (friction coefficient defined by material model).  But that is the exception and not the rule.

So, what do you mean by crashing?  At what step does that happen?  Are there any pop-open windows when that happens (normally a notice that a dmp file has been written)?
