I'm keeping out of the maths, thanks NFlynn! The question is really why do you need imaginary numbers: expressions tend to be used to report a value or set something and that tends to be "real". I've only ever seen imaginary numbers in control theory (lesson learnt - find a specialist) and the electrickery tools in Ansys (always find an expert!).
