Sorry it's taken me a bit to respond. I have actually had a little bit of success with the discrete phase model. I don't have the particles interacting with the continuous phase, but I do have to solve the DPM and the flow at the same time. I tried the techniques described in this source:

but no particles were generated during post processing. Incase you don't want to open the link, it describes a process in which the particles are tracked in the post processing phase after the flow has been solved for.
I intend to continue to look further into the model and appreciate the help.
