The circle equivalence method is the most common approach in material science and is also used in EBSD-SEM microscopes to calculate the grain size of non-circular or irregular shaped grains. In this method, the grain shape is not required for the calculation. Instead, the area of each grain (total count of pixels/cells representing the grains) is considered equal to the area of a circle and, based on that, the diameter of the grain is computed.
