You could right click on a design point to "Export Selected Design Points." It writes a new project only containing that design point. Then you can open it in a different workbench session if you have a second available license.
This amounts to a similar thing to your workaround but in a different order. At least it doesn't alter the current workbench project, so you don't have to worry about oversaving without the results.
