Suppose the initial geometry was the two metal plates and an elastomer solid body bonded to each plate. Say one plate was fixed, you could move the other plate to compress the elastomer or move it in the other direction to put the elastomer in tension. What would you be missing in this model compared with the model you describe above? What is the benefit of having an initial interference?
