Discovery Live doesn't use the available memory to the maximum as the solver always keep some memory in buffer for:

  1. Other PC operations
  2. Any other additional demand in memory you may need further in your simulation. This additional demand may be because of changes in geometry, adding new analysis type, putting all result displays to ON, increasing fidelity (if not on max fidelity already) etc.

Hence, in order to be conservative so as not to run out of memory on the GPU and avoid any crash, it is important to have the buffer.
