Indeed, the planar support is as good as frictionless support, and can only be applied to planar faces.

As you said, the problem appears to be well defined/constrained but the solver is mistakenly treating it as an unconstrained model. Did you try the workaround suggested in the post you shared. I checked by creating a dummy body and fixing it, this helped me get the model running.

 

I understand that this is a crude workaround but it does help in getting things done in 201R2 for such models. Development is already aware of this issue and necessary changes are expected in next release.
