As you can see in the snippet of the help document below, once set to Lightweight, Discovery SpaceClaim drives all changes to the pattern from the initial design member. 

 

This is why you are unable to select the pattern members individually. 

Although, the changes you make to the pattern leader will be applied to all the pattern members.  Please refer the attached video to get a quick demonstration of this.

I hope I have addressed all your issues on this.
