Change of contact status

      Hello all,

I'm new to Ansys and I'm not able to solve the following problem:

I have an assembly which consists only of surface elements.

When I generate the mesh I receive the following alerts:

Info: "In one or more contact regions, the contact area or the target area of shells is set to program-controlled. This can affect performance when writing the input file. Consider displaying element normals and selecting either the top or bottom shell area. "

Warning: "The contact status has suddenly changed.  Check the results carefully for possible separation of contact areas."

Nevertheless, up to here I can calculate a solution.

The problem starts, when I add a convergence for one surface. The program does not calculate further and gives me the following allerts:

Error: "A contact assignment does not contain any elements. Right-click on the message and "Go to Object" shows the contact area.

The assignment may have been removed by meshing or the trim tolerance is too aggressive."

Error: "An error occurred in the post-processing module: invalid or missing result file."

Error: "An error has occurred in the Solver module: general error."

it takes me to this view when i right-click on the last error message. 25 of my contacts are marked here, but I dont know how I can resolve the problem.

Thanks a lot for any help in advance :)

      Hi Tim,

Try using a finer mesh and see if that helps.

        Hello Ashish,

I gave the Mesh an element size of 20 mm. Unfortunately the issue persists. Do you have another idea how i can fix this?

        Regards

        Tim

Could you share the project files for reviewing your settings in more detail please?

I did some more work on the topic and found 3 connections in the contact tool, which are marked in orange.

These Contacts all belong to parallel planar surfaces, that are connected to each other. The next pictures shows one example:

Im not sure if that is the reason why I cant apply convergence to my surfaces.

      Kind regards

      Tim

Hi, I was able to perform a convergence on the surface you requested. I had to make many changes in the geometry using SpaceClaim. I removed all the contacts you had created and used the option of shared topology by creating 4 separate parts.

      1. Hull
      2. Column.
      3. Parallel Surface 1.
      4. Parallel Surface 2.

I created bonded contacts between these 4 parts. On the parallel surfaces, I placed a pinball radius between the surfaces

With the analysis resolved, I added convergence on the surface of interest.

        Hello José,

Thank you very much, that helped me a lot.

Could you send me your solution? I was not able to reproduce this until now.

        Kind regards

        Tim
