Contact between hemispherical ball and a flat surface

      Dear all,

I got contact and constraint-related issue in my project work. Whatever the constraints are given in the Solidworks 2022 students' version is not maintained same when I import the assembled(tried step and .sldasm format) model the constraints are not maintaining throughout the simulation. For example when I gave coincident to the horizontal surface of the model to the horizontal reference plane (to avoid rotation or tilting of that surface) the solid surface is not restricted to planar motion but it is making rotary motion with respect to horizontal. Like this other few constraints are not maintaining when I run the simulation in ansys. But if I check the DOF in SolidWorks it is working properly.

      Dear Karthik,

I believe that constraints applied in an external CAD software works only inside its own software. In Ansys what you can do with the CAD model is, in SpaceClaim for example, adjust parts positioning between each other and tweak features to simplify your model for the simulation. Then, the type of constraints you are mentionining (preventing rotation, etc) should be done via the boundary conditions already inside the Mechanical application.

Here follow a link for a good example on how to setup the hertzian contact problem you are working with:
Hertz Contact Mechanics - ANSYS Innovation Courses

The guy uses Design Modeler instead of SpaceClaim for the CAD, but what is relevant for you is how the model is set up inside Mechanical.

      Hope that helps!

I went through those reference materials but mine actually is sliding contact.

        Thanks for the reference.
