SubscriberHello,
I am trying to solve coupled CFD-FEM problem for following two cases described below.
ANSYS fluent is used for shock wave generation and FEM to understand its effect on the structure. Shock wave acts on the structure for few seconds and deforms the structures.
Shall we solve this problem using ANSYS implicit (Static structural/ Transient Structural) or explicit tools (ANSYS Explicit / LS-Dyna)?
ANSYS implicit allows use of System Coupling option for coupled CFD-FEM problem in ANSYS workbench while ANSYS explicit doesn’t allow same. Can you please help me to use two way coupling in ANSYS explicit/ LS Dyna using ANSYS APDL commands?
Thank you.

Forum ModeratorYes?
If you're interested in the outcome on the solid part I'd focus more on the Explicit/Dyna side of things. If the object doesn't move (much) then Fluent would be a better option.

SubscriberHello,
I will simplify my question. I want to simulate shock wave problem in ANSYS fluent and calculate pressure/ force data from ANSYS fluent to FEM tools like (ANSYS explicit or LS Dyna). Again predict and apply displacement of solids from Explicit or LS Dyna back to Fluent. Is it possible to do so?

Forum ModeratorAssuming Explicit or Dyna can use System Coupling, then yes. I'll get one of the FSI experts to review.
If deflection isn't too high there's also the Fluent intrinsic FSI - just do the whole lot in Fluent.

SubscriberAs per my undertanding the system coupling is not possible with Explicit or Dyna. I can use Fluent intrinsic FSI but, I also need to predict the failure in solids subjected to pressure loading. I would like to discuss this problem with FSI expert.

Ansys EmployeeYou are correct, Explicit Dynamics / LS-Dyna are currently not available as Systems Coupling participants.

SubscriberIs it possible to couple Fluent and LS Dyna using scripts? Can FSI expert from ANSYS help me in coupling the two tools?
