How best to simulate steel structure on soil/ground?

      Hi,

I have been using elastic support to simulate the interaction between a steel structure being placed on ground (compacted/uncompacted). Is this a good/advisable approach? Is there a better approach to simulate the steel structure supporting a vertical load (e.g. support stand)? Obviously, the flexible ground induces more flexure in the steel structure, hence getting more stress hot spots on the steel structure - when compared to a rigid foundation (e.g. fixed support or displacement).

Any advice would be great. Thanks.
