Is there a way to select which modules to be installed in the student version?

  I am trying to follow instructions from here
  Download Ansys Student | Workbench-based Simulation Tools
  to install ANSYS. However, the installation goes directly to the end and dumps 33Gb plus worth of files on my machine. I don't need all the modules it is installing, just a couple. I there a way to select which modules I need to be installed and deselect the rest?

  Not with Student. There is with the full version as users often skip the bits they don't have licences for.

  This is a very bad idea. If you do not provide a good demo version, people will be motivated toward piracy. What I, unfortunately, see a lot on other unofficial forums, including the Discord channel for ANSYS. https://discord.gg/GXBbhav
  
  Please provide this feature so users can select the specific products they need.
