laminar or turbulent flow fluid gap

      I am simulating a gap with a step between the rotor and stator with eccentricity in Fluent, I have read a number of papers and it looks like there is a mixed opinion on whether the flow is laminar or turbulent. For my work, I want to simulate this case, but don't know what to choose? I also want to know if the flow becomes turbulent from laminar(if it physically happens), should I use transition SST model for that?

      You need to work it out based on whatever criterion makes sense. For most engineering flows it's turbulent. Note, the transition models are computationally more expensive, and may require additional boundary settings which may not be known. 

      If you're really not sure run turbulent and see how the flow works out.
