Manipulating protected depths

My model consists of a lofted cylinder and a sphere. For topology optimisation, I want to protect everything except the sphere. With the protected depth from the top surface to the bottom of the cylinder shown in the picture, a portion of the sphere is protected. How could manipulate the protected depths so that the portion on the left of the blue dotted line is not protected?

      Hello Farhana Aziz

Let me give it a try from my end and get back to you.

      Hello Farhana Aziz

I tried performing a similar simulation by applying boundary conditions on the flat faces of the cylinder, with a certain protected depth but there is no change in the shape of the sphere.

Can you please share the model you are working with so that I can check at my end?

Subashni Hi there, attached is the file. Thank you.

      Hello Farhana Aziz

I understand that both this and the other query(link below) are the same issue.

Topology Optimisation solution conditions - Questions - Ansys Discovery Forum

To avoid confusion, let us continue the discussion here.

I see that in the images you have shared, you have applied boundary conditions on some of the faces of the spherical region.

Please note that the faces with boundary conditions do not get optimized as they have a boundary condition applied on them.

I performed same simulation and I see that when the protected depth is set at default 1mm, there is significant change in the shape. (see attached files)

In the second test case, I set the protected depth as 6.75mm(half of the total depth) and I see some changes in the sphere.

But when I set the protected depth as 13.5mm, there is no change in the shape of the spherical region.

Let me check with the development team here and get back to you here. but please note that topology optimization can only give an approximate design and you may need to refine the design further to best suit your needs.
