Mechanical APDL 2022 R2 won’t install unless 2022 R1 is installed

Hi, IT Admin here so less of a user and more just working with installation instructions. But running into an issue where APDL on 2022 R2 installs as an empty icon/failing program when only R2 gets installed. If we install it in conjunction with 2022 R1, the install works great but we are left with an install that is 102GB+ which is not sustainable in our enterprise environment.

When working with just the R2 install, every other program seems to launch fine and show correctly on the machine. Updates/service packs did not resolve this, only installing R1 did.

Any advice for managing this as we have many users in need of 2022 R2 Mechanical APDL. Our env is pushed out to windows machines and many are done via SCCM deployments but we have tried many different ways of installing to see if APDL ever worked and it has not. Thanks for any help.

      Hi Mason

Can you please post this also under ansys products section (you might get more help there with installation issues):

      Thank you

      Erik

      Hi Mason

Ansys releases are independent, that is 2022R2 does not patch, update or interfere with say 2022R1. There are occasionally service packs for select versions.
Versions do have to be installed in succession however.

It seems as if your download images are corrupt. I prefer to download the .iso files, mount and copy the contents to a common folder.

For network installs, the program is installed in a common network share location. Then, each client machine only needs to run ProductConfig to create shortcuts and environment variables.

Hi Erik, thank you. I have posted there as well.

Gary, I can try the .iso method. I have tried new downloads from the site (not using the .iso) and even tested installs on freshly imaged machines. For whatever reason, Mechanical APDL doesn't show up unless R1 came first. And then, both r1 and r2 show as working. Its very strange behavior as its the only thing I have noticed of the installs that seems to rely on something from the other.

As far as network installs go, thank you for that info. I will see if that is useful going forward in our env. Thanks again.

The setup.exe program and the ProductConfig.exe program check for and install prerequistes as needed.
They are copied to the install folder under C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v{version}\prereq

It may be that 2022R2 is not installing the prerequisites, whereas 2022R1 is.
      A few possible reasons:
       – Pending reboot
       – Pending Windows Updates
       – Newer version of Prerequisite is already installed.
