how to edit/modify measurement of imported geometry in design modeler and make them parameter for DOE

      Hello Aditya,

You can use SolidExt1 (Beta) tool to make changes to any solid bodies. Or you can add a new sketch to imported geometry and make necessary changes in Design Modeler.

There's an inbuilt parameters tool available in DesignModeler to parameterize your dimensions. However, this is a much simpler process when you use Discovery or SpaceClaim. You can simply use pull tool and make the change parameterized using ruler option, that pops up when pull tool is active. Refer to the screenshot below from SpaceClaim(Ruler tool is marked in red).

      Regards,

      Nanda.

      Hello,

I am facing an issue with parametrizing distances between two components in my imported geometry. Specifically, I have a polymer component (component 1) with a metal inlay component (component 2) inside it, and I am trying to import this geometry into my software. However, I am unable to parametrize the distances between the two components, and I need some guidance on how to achieve this. Can you please help me with this issue?

I attempted to use the solution you provided by going through SpaceClaim, selecting "Pull", and then parametrizing the distances between the two components. However, this method did not work for me, and I am still unable to successfully parametrize the distances between component 1 and component 2. Can you suggest any other methods or provide further guidance on how to accomplish this task?

      Hello Aditya,

There are couple of videos available on YouTube to accomplish this task. Follow these steps for the same. Let's consider 2 rectangular blocks placed on top of another, as shown in screenshot below.

Here are the steps required when you want to parameterize top solid with respect to bottom solid:

      1.     Select the top solid from design tree or click RMB 3 times to select the required solid (RMB-Right mouse button).

      2.     After selecting the body, you need use the MOVE tool. When move tool is active, SpaceClaim will ask you in what direction you need to move the body.

      3.     Select any of the direction you need, you can translate in 3 axes and rotate in 3 axes.

      4.     After selecting the direction of move, the tool will activate a small window just beside the selected body. Refer the screenshot below.

      5.     After selecting the ruler option, you need to specify the reference geometry/location you want parameterize the solid.

      6.     For your case, if you selected component 1 using move tool, then your component 2 should be reference solid. Reference can be face or line also.

      7.     After selecting the reference geometry, SpaceClaim will pop up a bold P symbol, right next to dimension cell.

      8.     When you click on P symbol, SC creates a parameter for you.

      9.     You can then, chose whatever distance you require in between those components. SC will move the body accordingly.

      All the best,

      Nanda.

Thank you for your response. I appreciate the figure you provided, which demonstrates how to parameterize the distance between one component. However, my specific requirement is to parameterize the distance between two components, as it is essential for achieving the desired geometry. This will provide a clearer understanding of the relationship between the two components.

Regarding importing the CAD model in the .stp file format, it seems that the dimensions of one component are not being recognized properly. Can you assist further in resolving the issue and guide me on how to parameterize the distance between the two components effectively.

      Aditya,

I thought you wanted to control the location of an inner part entirely enclosed within an outer part. In that case, isn’t there just one dimension from the floor of the outer part to the floor of the inner part?  The minimum value must be greater than 0, or else the two floors touch, and the maximum value must be less than the thickness of the outer minus the thickness of the inner part or else the inner part breaks out.

I recommend you do this in DesignModeler and not SpaceClaim because if you make a mistake and enter a large value for the dimension that puts the inner part outside the outer part, you can’t type in a small value and recover the geometry if you use SpaceClaim, it becomes broken.  If you type in a large value in DesignModeler, the geometry recovers after you type in the small value.

In the DesignModeler history tree, the last step is a Boolean subtraction to make a cavity in the outer part using the inner part.
