      Hi folks,

I am attempting to understand better how the embedded nCode life works from a theory standpoint, especially on the stress combination aspect.. I know critcal plane theory is the go-to method for digging through multiaxial stress state combinations in search for the 'worst' one... i just don't know how it does this efficiently at surfaces at contact.. meaning, it essentially assumes that the stresses at the surface of the part are zero in the normal direction.. but in cases where two parts are being compressed together, this is a poor assumption? Does Ncode just go ahead and include the normal to surfaces stresses there?

      Thanks!

By default, DesignLife assumes a 2D stress state for the surface nodes.  The embedded Add-On uses that default assumption.  You cannot change that behavior in the current release of the Add-On.

If you use standalone or integrated Ansys nCode DesignLife interfaces, you can force DesignLife to evaluate a 3D stress state.  You need to change the "SurfaceNodesOnly" and "ResolveToLocal" settings to "False".  Those options will be included in a future release of the Add-On.

Be aware that with those settings, the critical plane calculations will be much more extensive.  You probably want to use the "SelectonGroupType" to limit the analysis to a subset of nodes.

      Thanks Daniel.

Can you tell me how to access nCode DesignLife NOT using the add-on interface? I am able to access the embedded one... not the standalon/integrated as shown above.

What license do you have?  With a Pro license, you can only use the Add-On.  With a Premium or Enterprise license, you can use the Workbench Ansys nCode DesignLife integrated systems or the HBM nCode Glyworks interface.  I cannot explain how to use those interfaces in the Learning Forum.

Do you have access to the Ansys Learning Hub?  If so, there are self-paced training courses in the Structures Durability room that explain how to use Ansys nCode DesignLife.  I recommend reviewing the Ansys nCode DesignLife Getting Started and Ansys nCode DesignLife Time Domain Analysis courses.
