Physics Solver Stalls at 85%

I am having an issue where I am trying to run a simple simulation on a model. However, when I try and solve, the solver runs for a long time and stalls at 85% and never arrives at a solution. Is there a way to get some help via remote session?

I think you are talking about AIM. I have more expertise on the ANSYS Workbench platform than AIM, and am willing to take a look at your model, though I will have to download AIM first. The best way to get started is to create an archive file (.wbpz) by following these directions.  Post a reply saying what version of AIM you are using and after you post, an Attach button appears to the right of the post that you can use to upload your project.

Hello peteroznewman, thanks for your timely response. Please see the requested archive file that was attached to the thread. Thanks again.

      Hello amorenojr,

I don't work for ANSYS, I only use their product, but I don't use AIM, though I have played with it since version 18.1.

I installed AIM 2019 R2 and downloaded your archive. I too find that AIM stalls.

      You did nothing wrong.

I even saved your geometry and started a fresh model and had the same result.

It is also annoying that you can't stop the process gracefully. You have to kill the process with the Task Manager.

I have always found AIM to be unreliable compared with ANSYS Workbench.

I recommend you download ANSYS Student Workbench.

Here are two videos that compare the two products doing the same model at the version 18.1 release.

The current release allows you to skip the Mesh process. Even if I manually added the mesh, it still stalled.

peteroznewman, thanks for your help and recommendations. Unfortunately, I do not have an ANSYS Workbench license. Is there a way to contact ANSYS directly in order for them to provide a resolution?

      Amorenojr,

Many people on this site have downloaded the free Student license that anyone can install and use, but it has a limit on model size. You could download that now.

Are you at a University and using a Research license?  Or are you on a Commercial license that your company provided?

If you are at a University, this website is the first line of support. Someone at your institution is the Ansys Support Coordinator (ASC) who can escalate problems that remain unresolved.

If you are using a Commercial license, then your company has support from the ANSYS distributor who sold you the software.

I am an industry professional at a university, and I miss spoke, I discovered that I have access to Workbench. I am attempting to run the FEA and see if that will suffice for what we are looking to accomplish.

The purpose of my use is to pilot a course that combines the use of AIM (may now be Workbench) in conjunction with an advanced solid mechanics course. The goal is to expose students to a practical application of their knowledge base while preparing them for being an engineer in an actual work environment. I am trying to provide insights and technical expertise into how real-world problems can be aligned with the course projects. My hope is that the students can come away with exposure to the ANSYS software tool and its limitation and show them that it can provide them a reasonable result while they learn how to interpret the results instead of taking them at face value.

Thanks for your help. I will be contacting my ANSYS support coordinator.

      UPDATE

I did a little more testing on my laptop and discovered that the NVIDIA QUADRO K1100M graphics card had been disabled and the Intel HD Graphics chip was running the display.

After I enabled the NVIDIA card, AIM 2019 R2 began working the way it is supposed to.

ANSYS products are tested with a list of graphics cards and any defects are fixed before releasing the product.  These cards are marketed to engineering professionals and carry a higher price than the same chipset that is put into a gaming card and marketed to gamers.  The Professional cards have drivers that are tested to work with ANSYS and other CAD software, whereas the Gaming cards are tested to work with gaming software.

The NVIDIA QUADRO cards are featured on the list of tested cards.  If a computer has a gaming card, it might work with ANSYS, but it might not. You have to test it to find out.

What graphics card is in the computer you were using with AIM?

If the students can work in a Lab at school where the standard hardware has been tested to work with ANSYS, then having a class use AIM is feasible, but if you expect the students to install AIM on their own computers, then you can expect to have some students have the same issue you had.

One last point, ANSYS supports Windows Remote Desktop, so if you remote into a computer, you might see AIM operate properly.

So I tried using Workbench too and it also does not solve. Strange. How do I know if my graphics card is disabled? I am running an NVIDIA K5100M but I do not know how to make sure it is active. I assumed it was the primary GPU running when I was on the computer. I have used this computer for a while now with Creo Parametric and other high-end CAD packages. Never had an issue until now. Any advice?

I was the one who disabled the NVIDIA card on that laptop when I was trying to get the screen recording software OBS to work and it was not working. I had forgotten to turn the NVIDIA card back on.

If you have an Intel HD Graphics integrated chip, you can use Device Manager to disable that device, then you will have to be running the NVIDIA card.

My only advice is to upgrade the NVIDIA graphics driver to the latest version.

This is really a great thing to see that you are discussing the graphics card. But for using this you need to create a system which is compatible enough with your graphics card. Because if the system is not compatible enough then you may face some router issues and after that, you have to learn how to Solve Netgear Router Password Issues and then you will get the proper solution.

RWOOLHOU: Not sure what the router would do in this case & given the link seems to want you to contact (and pay for) support it's been removed.
