Regarding explicit dynamics

  Why don't we use any force during tensile test at explicit dynamics?why we use only displacement as boundary condition?
  Again,,could anyone explain the terms such as number of steps,end time and maximum number of cycle?
  I am facing problems with energy error....please help me out....
