SubscriberI am trying to perform static structural analysis on a hollow square section. the beam is simply supported. The side is 40mm. thickness is 1mm and the length of the beam is 1000. The material in consideration has E=210GPa and Poisson's ratio=0.3. A point load of 5000 N is applied at the center of the beam. The computational and hand calculation results are very different from each other. what is the reason for this difference?

Ansys EmployeeHi Sarswati,
This is a simple model, so there shouldn’t be much more difference in the computational and hand calculation result. I have suggested some following points that might be helpful in investigating the issues clearly:
1. Please review the mesh quality and refine the mesh of the model.
2. Please check your point of application of the load and the other boundary conditions you have applied in the ansys.
You can also upload a screenshot of the model and hand calculations that you have performed. It would be helpful to investigate the differences in the results.
All the best

SubscriberThe computational deflection is 15.07mm. one end is fixed. another i have restricted movement in x and y direction. z direction is free.

Ansys EmployeeHi
This is very thin so solid elements are not suitbale. Use beam elements (simply supported with load in the middle). If you do that you get about 12.7 mm disp.
All the best
Erik
