  Which TSHELL formulation are you using? I am not sure if all TSHELL formulations are available for battery simulation, but formulation 3, 5, and 7 use the full 3D stress update and may give better results when the thick shell is loaded in the thickness direction.
  I could not access the paper you reference, but I found the following one which I think is very similar?
